Remission to John Forrest

The which day there was produced in court a remission in favour of John Forrest, who was indicted to stand trial before the Circuit Court at Stirling in spring 1823, for the crime of violating the sepulchres of the dead and had sentence of ‘fugitation’ passed against him for not appearing, which remission was ordered to be recorded and whereof the tenor follows: George IV, by the grace of God king of the Britains, defender of the faith, to all upright men to whom our present letters shall reach, greetings. Know you that since John Forrest, at the circuit court of the justiciary held at Stirling in the spring of the year of the lord 1823, was prosecuted for helping in the abstraction of a corpse from the cemetery of Stirling and the sentence of proscription was announced against him not presenting himself on the day of the cause of the trial, we, in consideration of certain favourable circumstances that have been presented to us in favour of the said John Forrest and of his contrition for the same crime and from our royal grace and favour, have remitted, ensured against harm and pardoned the said John Forrest not only of the before-said crime but also of the sentence of proscription. In testimony of which matter we have ordered our seal, which has been drawn up by the union to be kept and ordained to be used in Scotland in the turn and place of the great seal of the same, to be appended to these presents, at our hall at Carlton House on the 29th day of the month of June in the year of the lord 1824 and in the fifth year of our reign.

By the sign manual S.D.N. of the king, above-written.

Written to the seal and registered the 7th day of July 1824.

Signed Thomas Miller.

Sub-sealed at Edinburgh the 7th day of July 1824.

Signed James S. Robertson.
